YOUR LOVE STORY

The exercise

Choose one scene you wrote during this lab.

Read it once as a reader, not as the writer who knows what you meant.
Pay attention to:

  • where you have to reread a sentence
  • where the text explains something that is already clear from the action
  • where the scene takes time to get going or lingers after its purpose is done

Now revise the scene with a single aim: make it easier to read.

Focus on:

  • cutting explanation that repeats or interprets what is already on the page
  • sharpening the central action, exchange, or observation
  • starting the scene later than feels comfortable
  • ending it earlier than feels polite

You may change sentences.
You may change word choices.
You may change emphasis.

Parameters

  • Revise for 15 minutes
  • Remove as many emotional adjectives as possible

If you have more time, repeat this process with the other scenes; some may start to align as parts of a the same love story!

We at WABB love to hear from you. If you used our exercises we love to read your work! If you want to share your stories with us, please get in touch!
