LOVE INTERRUPTED

WABB LAB – LOVE – DAY 3

Love at first sight may sound fabulous, but if they find each other straight away, the story will be over soon. That’s why in storytelling we always need to postpone the end result whether you are writing literature, comedy, drama or theatre.

The exercise

Write a scene where two people are about to connect, but they are interrupted by a third person.

Choose one interruption:

  • a phone call that must be answered
  • a child waking up
  • someone who wasn’t supposed to be there entering the room
  • an announcement that changes the plans
  • choose from the above or come up with your own

What to write

Show:

  • what the moment could have become
  • how the interruption cuts it short
  • what remains unsaid

Do not:

  • resolve the scene
  • jump forward in time

Rules for writing:

  • One interruption only
  • Only a few lines are allowed after it happens

Tip!

Think about what the perfect unfolding of the scene for your main character would be. Let the interruption be their worst case scenario.
